Well, after 29 years and change, the BOP, has downgraded my custody level and transferred me to a "LOW".
I am very happily now at the Low in Bastrop, Texas. Man, it is so nice here.
Trees everywhere, squirrels, birds, flower beds along the sidewalks, cats ... it's just a beautiful place.
Of course some folks complain about it here; I just smile and suppose that this is just human nature, that and, some of these guys have never been anywhere else, so they have nothing to compare it to. Trust me, this place is a God-send. For instance, most if not all other prisons are set up like warehouses, huge rectangular buildings with cells down the sides and a big open space in the middle ... always crowded and noisy; TVs on the walls, guys packed into segregated blocks of plastic chairs watching this or that. Here at Bastrop the buildings are set up like office space, different sections, staggered, which puts no more than forty or so people in one area, and we have TV rooms rather than TVs just hanging on the walls. Very different. The big difference though is the individual cells. In all other spots there is a huge AC/Heating unit that serves the whole building; you never have a choice of the temperature; it's always too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, or the Common Area will be cold and the cells hot, oftentimes uncomfortable ... these warehouses are designed to be uncomfortable, like the design architect was instructed by Satan to help administer our punishment. But here at Bastrop, each cell has its own thermostat, and so we are able to keep our cells comfortable. Truly, this place is comparably amazing.
They have a Unicor here and I was going to work there ... but ... I decided that I didn't want to work full-time anywhere; getting old ... and I want to take it easy and paint ... plus, my kids were after me to stop working; feet hurt all the time, back, knees, seventy year old man stuff. So I took an easy job in the cellblock.
They also have weights here. In my day I was a big gym guy, but alas have not had the chance to lift for 30 years; that has changed, I have signed up and had my first workout ... nothing to brag about there, but I'm out there, right beside the youngsters ... faking, of course, like nothing hurts :). God is good.
I am so happy here.
Peace Be With You. mark
